SAP hat mit seinen Unternehmenslösungen erfolgreich die Standardisierung von Unternehmensprozessen in allen Branchen erreicht. Das Paradigma, dass Software an ein Unternehmen angepasst wird, wurde ausgehebelt, und ganze Unternehmensprozesse wurden entsprechend den Vorgaben der Software transformiert. Eine Vorstufe von Process optimization as a Service als Form einer operationalisierten Optimierungsstrategie wurde dadurch ins Leben gerufen. Process optimization as a Service bedeutet, dass Unternehmensabläufe nicht durch dedizierte Transformations-Projekte optimiert werden, sondern durch die Einführung einer Software-Lösung, wie z. B. SAP im Bereich ERP oder MS Outlook im Bereich Kommunikationsmanagement

Jeder Unternehmer steht früher oder später vor der Entscheidung bestimmte Aufgaben selbst zu erledigen, oder einem Externen zu übergeben. Manche Dienstleistungen werden ohne große Überlegung an externe Anbieter vergeben, wie z.B. die Steuererklärung, die Gehaltsabrechnung, der Webauftritt oder die Pressearbeit. Diese Arbeiten können sehr leicht herausgegeben werden, da sie im Verständnis aller Beteiligten klar umrissen sind. Die Kosten und Kostenstrukturen sind klar und übersichtlich, z.B. 2.500 Eur für eine neue Website, 75 Eur monatlich für den Steuerberater.

My experience with offshore outsourcing which is mainly based on the Europe perspective started during the “hype times” around 2000 and at that stage, most companies were urgently looking for talented IT experts. I believe the discussions about the positive and especially the negative effects off offshore outsourcing and who will be the winner happened a few years later when the downturn hit and people feared to lose their job or managers to lose lots of their direct reporting staff.Analysis done by consulting companies (e.g. the McKinsey Global Institute) outlines a positive long term perspective concerning the effects of offshoring on the countries deploying offshore services, but this seems not always reflect personal experience of people affected.Who will be the winners of the globalisation trend in IT services? Will it be solely the offshore locations or also the ones using the services? I encourage everybody to articulate this opinion and the supporting facts.

At present, most of the offshore projects in place are building on “static” processes like Waterfall, RUP etc. More and more companies start to deploy agile methodologies (e.g. SCRUM) in a globally distributed environment. Is that compatible in an outsourcing and offshoring scenario? Does the agile methodology with its daily communication needs not impose to high communication overheads and thus costs when working on a globally distributed team? What are the effects on an outsourcig contract if specifications are no longer stable but doe change within the projects, as decided by the team?Insights from experts really doing such projects should be of value for lots of others.
